One possible consequence, one that has encouraged many Americans to consider taking vitamin supplements, is food allergies.

According to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics, these reactions are more common among children than healthcare experts previously realized. Researchers in Chicago and St. Louis announced that approximately 8 percent of all children under the age of 18 have them.

The team derived this figure from data collected from more than 38,000 U.S. children and their families. Among those respondents who reported having food allergies, an estimated 30 percent were allergic to more than one food item. In all, 38 percent of children with allergies had severe ones.

The most common pediatric food allergies were to peanuts, milk and shellfish. People who cannot eat these foods may be missing out on key nutrients. Rather than putting their health at risk by eating these items, individuals may consider trying a daily multivitamin or an herbal supplement.

Among individuals who take herbal supplements, multivitamins and other all-natural, complementary therapies, there may be good news for those who experience seasonal environmental sensitivities. A team of European immunologists has found that a specially derived plant extract may help support a normal immune response to pollen.

The extract in question is called Ze 339, or petasol butenoate complex. Scientists found that the compound helps with environmental sensitivities, as well as compounds that affect histamine and leukotriene receptor activity.

Where does this substance come from? According to the study’s authors, they took it directly from the Petzell variety of the Petasites hybridus, otherwise known as the common butterbur.

The findings, which appear in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, challenge the notion that seasonal environmental sensitivities aren’t as well controlled with natural compounds. A previous report, published in the journal Headache, had already determined that this extract can reduce the impact of occasional headaches.

Individuals who want to maintain good health in as natural a way as possible, may consider taking dietary supplements to give their immune systems adequate doses of key vitamins and minerals.

According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, up to 70 percent of those with the respiratory condition are also allergic to things like pollen, dander or even cockroaches.

A new study has found that rates of childhood asthma in New York City often match up to levels of cockroach, cat and mouse allergens found in the home. Published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the report stated that kids living in neighborhoods with the highest asthma rates are more likely to be sensitive to these particles.

Those that lived in areas where asthma is prevalent had a roughly 24 percent chance of being allergic to cockroaches, for instance, while those in low-prevalence neighborhoods had an 11 percent chance.

The team concluded that simply being exposed to these allergens can make children and adults more sensitive to airborne particles.

A number of research groups are looking into natural therapies for asthma. Several years ago, scientists at Imperial College, London, developed an inhalable mist based on resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, dark chocolate and certain herbal supplements. In time, such a method might ease the symptoms of pulmonary disorders, the group said.

While some scientists investigate what triggers allergic reactions in the body, others are looking into the mechanisms by which they occur. Recently, a group of Swedish immunologists found that a common anticoagulant molecule plays a big part in many allergic reactions.

The compound is called heparin, and it both naturally occurs in the body and is synthesizable in the laboratory. Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet have determined that heparin facilitates the inflammation that occurs in an allergic reaction.

During such a reaction, the body produces heparin, which activates a specific kind of immune body called a mast cell, the team said. These cells in turn make bradykinin, a protein that leads to inflammation, porousness of the blood vessels and even anaphylactic shock.

Scientists are not yet sure how to slow or stop this response. Until they are, it may be advisable to take an herbal-supplement or vitamin tablet for general well-being, in order to maintain maximum bodily health.

Newly published research suggests that this form of bronchial therapy may temporarily lower immunity in children.

Pediatricians at the Universite de Montreal discovered this effect after giving asthmatic children and teens small, measured doses of antigens, which are particles that cause an immune reaction.

Multiple pediatric participants exhibited a weakened response to the exposure, based on their blood levels of antibodies. Researchers said that inhaled corticosteroids may be to blame, although they added that the risk is small.

"The very rare occurrence of severe infectious disease is reassuring and would suggest that the window of risk is very small and only applies to exposure to a new antigen," said lead author Francine Ducharme.

Whether an individual has asthma or not, proper nutrition is an essential part of keeping the immune system strong. Adults may consider investing in multivitamins to make sure that they are not exacerbating existing allergies.

More than 17 million American adults have asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Now, experts at Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine have announced that maintaining adequate nutrition appears to be linked to lower allergy rates in children.

A report published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that children who have vitamin D deficiencies had higher rates of 11 common allergens. These substances included ragweed, oak pollen, dog dander, cockroach leavings and food allergens.

The team came to this conclusion after analyzing blood samples taken from more than 6,000 children and adults during the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey five years ago.

The link between vitamin D deficiencies and allergies did not appear among adults. Researchers were careful to note that these findings suggest an association but not necessarily a root cause. Taking vitamin D is not guaranteed to treat allergies.

However, they noted that children should always consume an adequate diet, including 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D each day.

Adults who want to maintain proper nutrition and to give the body plenty of vitamins and minerals with which to regulate itself, may consider taking a daily dietary supplement.

Because of the high prevalence of adverse dermal reactions to allergens, a condition typically diagnosed as eczema, researchers have been looking into how to lower the prevalence of this problem, as well as what such a reduction would do.

A study lately published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that kids who have eczema and hay fever are nine times more likely to develop asthma in adulthood, compared to their allergy-less peers.

More than 17 million Americans over the age of 18 suffer from the respiratory condition, which can dramatically reduce quality of life.

Researchers noted that clamping down on the incidence of eczema and seasonal allergies may indirectly reduce the prevalence of allergic breathing difficulties.

"The implications of this study are that prevention and rigorous treatment of childhood eczema and hay fever may prevent the persistence and development of asthma," the team concluded.

Along with typical allergy medications, taking a dietary supplement may improve overall health and wellness by giving the body the nutrients it needs.

However, keeping the immune system in working order may de doubly important for marathoners, many of whom complain of nasal allergies during races.

A study conducted by the UK's Northumbria University found that more than 60 percent of people who ran the London Marathon complained of eye and nose irritation after running the 26.2 miles to the finish line.

After testing blood samples taken from 150 randomly selected runners, researchers found that 35 percent of these marathoners were suffering from nasal allergies.

Scientists noted that while this problem does not sound severe, it has the ability to affect a runners performance, especially since just 8 percent of participants reported taking an anti-allergy medication.

When exposure to pollen is unavoidable, it may be helpful to take a vitamin supplement, providing the immune system with the nutrients it needs to process allergens in the body.

While dietary supplements are always one easy solution for this problem, a new study has pointed to goat's milk as another.

Researchers at the University of Granada recently analyzed the molecular composition of goat's milk and found that it contains less casein than human milk, meaning it is less likely to cause allergic reactions among children.

The study also noted that goat's milk has about 1 percent less lactose than cow's milk, indicating that milk taken from goats is less likely to irritate the digestive tract. Scientists even found that people with anemia and iron deficiency displayed improvements in health after drinking goat's milk, which helped them absorb iron.

Perhaps the only problem for many Americans is that goat's milk can be expensive and hard to find. Rather than going out of one's way to find a goat or a high-end grocery store, it can be easier to stick to vitamin supplements that contain calcium and vitamin D.

A report published in the International Journal of Biometeorology found that compared to 13- to 14-year-old teens who live in relatively sunless northern climes, those who receive an extra 20 minutes of sun exposure each day are 1.1 percent less likely to have asthma.

Likewise, 6- to 7-year-old children who get 20 extra minutes of ultraviolet light every day are 0.6 percent less likely to have the respiratory condition, compared to kids who see little daily direct sunlight.

The study's authors, all of whom hail from Spain, suggested that children who live above 40 degrees latitude be given an extra few minutes each day to go outside.

While the skin naturally synthesizes vitamin D3 after sun exposure, ultraviolet light increases the risk of melanoma in children and adults. For anyone who wants to boost their vitamin D levels without risking their skin, it may be safer to take a dietary supplement and to regularly consume dairy products.
