One way to help prevent car sickness or motion sickness may be learning to control your physical symptoms that lead to the occurrence. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has developed a program called autogenic-feedback training exercises (AFTE) after dealing with cases of nausea and vomiting aboard spacecrafts. According to NASA research psychologist Patricia S. Cowings, Ph.D., motion sickness can be prevented by learning to control bodily functions like sweating and increased heart rate through biofeedback training. “We don’t teach relaxation,” Cowings said in an MSNBC news report, “we teach control. It improves with practice, like any other skill.”
