Your sense of smell may have more of an impact on weight loss than previously thought. Scientists from the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation evaluated overweight and obese patients for six months as they used various crystals on their food. These crystals contained no calories, but were designed to enhance taste and smell to increase satiety in order to reduce the amount of food the subjects consumed.

Of the 1,436 patients that participated in the study, the average weight loss reported was around 30 pounds. The researchers concluded that by enhancing smell and taste during meals, it can help patients feel more satisfied and full so they eat less.

The foundation specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of many smell- and taste-related disorders. According to their website, lead researcher and director Alan Hirsh, M.D., has more than 25 years experience in helping patients to overcome the loss of smell and taste sensations. More than 200 studies have been completed, with multiple research projects presently under way.
