Did you know the hygiene of your mouth can also measure the healthiness of your heart? That’s right. Those of you with a mouth full of germs may have a higher risk of suffering from a heart attack.

A study conducted at the University of Buffalo in New York found that men and women who suffered from heart attacks had more bacteria present in their mouths. Researchers suggest that the bacteria may induce inflammation that may cause blood clots.

To help you avoid this heart disaster, here are some tips from the American Dental Association to keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, and definitely toss it after an infection or illness.
  • Clean between your teeth with dental floss daily to remove any lodged food particles.
  • Rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash several times a day to help stop germ build-up.
  • Visit an oral health professional regularly for cleaning and exams.
