Have you ever been afflicted with a case of the hiccups? This condition happens when the vagus nerve that runs from the brain to the abdomen gets irritated. However, sometimes hiccups can be related to common digestive troubles, too. According to Discovery Health, home remedies can often curb the reflexes by either overwhelming the vagus nerve with an alternate sensation or signaling the brain that other matters are more important in the body so it stops the reflexes.

Some of these remedies include:

  • A spoonful of sugar, placed on the back of the tongue, may create a sweet sensation throughout the nerve endings of the mouth and overload the reflexes.
  • Gently holding your hands over your ears (without applying any significant pressure that may damage your eardrum) may stimulate other nerve endings to relieve your hiccups.
  • Being scared or startled may overwhelm the vagus nerve.
  • Slowly drinking water, or gently gargling water, may help soothe your nerves.
  • Holding your breath, for as long as you can stand it, may help alleviate the spasms.
