People who strive for perfection may unknowingly bring serious health conditions upon themselves. According to researchers from Trinity Western University in Canada, the act of attaining perfection may cause you to neglect your normal diet, nutrition or exercise regimen. This behavior can harm your physical well-being and result in migraines, digestive disorders, asthma and/or chronic pain. And the stress and anxiety that come with overachievement can harm your emotional well-being, too.

Although it’s natural to set goals and desire to be perfect, it’s often an impossible goal since there’s room for error in many tasks.  Scientists indicate what works in the medical surgery field, which is intense and requires precision, may not necessarily be the best approach when it comes to dealing with other situations involving family and friends. The key is finding a balance across the board that suits different occasions.

If not, research shows that perfectionists and overachievers can lose control during stressful situations. Also, those in the study who rated themselves as high perfectionists had a 51 percent increased risk of death.
