Jogging for three hours a week may decrease the risk of dying from prostate cancerResearchers have discovered that exercising at least 15 minutes a day may help reduce the fatality risk for prostate cancer patients.

The study was presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention research conference, and scientists indicated that moderate levels of exercise can offer benefits to those fighting the disease.

Prostate cancer, which is detected through moderating PSA levels, is a common cancer found in men aged 60 and older that can become fatal without treatment.

The researchers looked at the exercise levels of 2,686 patients. They found that men who engaged in at least three hours a week of exercises such as jogging, biking, swimming and playing tennis, had a 35 percent lower risk of mortality.

When it came to walking, men who walked four or more hours a week had a 23 percent less risk of dying than those who walked less than 20 minutes a week. Similarly, men who walked at a fast pace for at least 90 minutes a week had a 51 percent less risk than those who walked less than 90 minutes a week at a slow pace.ADNFCR-1960-ID-19502418-ADNFCR

So you’ve got a prostate—but do you
know why you need it?

Your prostate should be the size and shape of a walnut and is located directly under your bladder, directly in front of your rectum.

It secretes milky fluid to:

  • Provide fluid for semen
  • Help moisten the lining of the urethra
  • Protect sperm from the acidic environment of the vagina and cervix
Over time, your prostate can grow to the size of a plum… then a lemon… and even a grapefruit. When your prostate becomes enlarged, it presses against your urethra and your normally powerful urine stream quickly turns into drabs and dribbles… similar to what happens when you step on a garden hose. You have a hard time voiding your bladder and that pressure can be really painful.

By the time you reach the age of 40, your body starts creating more of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme triggers the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestoterone (DHT).

An overabundance of DHT is the main cause of an enlarged prostate. Preventing your prostate from enlarging is the smartest thing you can do to help protect the health of your bladder and other vital organs.
