Hypnosis may ease hot flashesWomen who are suffering from menopausal symptoms may be interested in reading about a new study that suggests hypnosis may help ease hot flashes.

The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, investigated the effect of weekly hypnosis sessions on breast cancer survivors over a period of five weeks. Many breast cancer survivors frequently suffer from hot flashes, the researchers said.

During the sessions, participants were coaxed into a deeply relaxed state and then offered suggestions for mental imagery associated with a feeling of coolness.

At the end of the study, those who were hypnotized regularly reported reducing the intensity and frequency of hot flashes by 68 percent.

Dr. Gary Elkin of Baylor University and colleagues concluded that hypnosis could appeal to women who are "interested in alternatives to traditional hormone therapy and pharmacologic interventions."

Those who are interested in alternative health resources for treating menopausal symptoms have many options. According to Dr. Mary Hardy of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, soy foods, red clover and black cohosh are some of the natural ingredients that may help treat hot flashes.
