Those who suffer from arthritis often experience joint pain and stiffness which can be extremely uncomfortable but research reveals there may be a natural alternative to painkillers in the form of the ancient Chinese practice of Tai Chi.
The exercise is done fairly slowly, with a focus on rhythmic breathing and fluid, controlled movements similar to basic yoga. It is both inexpensive and can be done in either group setting or alone.
Tai chi is also supposed to return balance to both the practitioner’s mind and body and help loosen joints, which may ease joint pain and stiffness.
Dr. Chris Maher of the George Institute explains some of the positive results that he has seen in arthritis patients who chose to try out the exercises.
"Our study proves that tai chi relieves pain and disability among people with arthritis and shows a positive trend towards effects for overall physical health," he stated.
To fully calm both the mind and the body, consider taking nutritional supplements to compliment the tai chi exercises. Valerian, chamomile and passionflower help ease some of the symptoms of stress.
