The best medicine for cold and flu symptoms? Hot drinks

Hot drinks can stave off a coldEach year, millions of Americans purchase over-the-counter cold remedies in an effort to combat the symptoms of cold and flu.

But are there easier, more natural health resources that people can use to stave off illness and boost their immunity?

New research from Cardiff University’s Common Cold Centre suggests that you enjoy a hot drink at the first sign of a runny nose, cough, sneezing, sore throat or fatigue.

This remedy – although it may at first sound old-fashioned – has the potential to treat the typical symptoms of cold and flu, according to Professor Ron Eccles, director of the center.

As part of the study, the researchers heated fruit cordial and administered it to a group of cold sufferers. They compared the results to a control group, who had drunk the beverage at room temperature.

“Having a bottle of fruit cordial in the cupboard and making a hot drink could help fight off the symptoms of festive cold and flu,” Eccles commented.

As part of a regular routine to maintain a healthy immune system, some people take nutritional supplements to make sure their body’s pH balance is at an optimum level.
