Many physicians suggest that vitamin D can be useful towards the treatment of a lot of health maladies that affect areas such as bone health and dental. Now, a new study is suggesting that elderly patients may have a better quality of life depending on their vitamin D levels.
According to a study published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, vitamin D can help treat osteoporosis, arthritis and other painful bone and joint diseases that many seniors suffer from.
Researchers suggest that by taking copious amounts of the nutritional supplement, seniors may experience less discomfort as a result of these conditions and therefore may have a better quality of life.
Researchers examined 2,788 elderly patients with various levels of vitamin D in their systems and noticed their physical functionality. It was found that after reviewing their initial abilities compared to four years after the study, patients with higher levels of vitamin D had more mobility.
"Current dietary recommendations are based primarily on vitamin D’s effects on bone health," researcher Denise Houston said. "It is possible that higher amounts of vitamin D are needed for the preservation of muscle strength and physical function as well as other health conditions."
