Studies have shown that when taken as an herbal supplement, the extract of this plant may help improve mood.

Known as Hypericum perforatum, St. John's wort is a small flowering plant. Its yellow buds have been ground up and used as an alternative medicine for millennia, since at least the time of the ancient Greeks, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).

How does it work? Scientists are still investigating the properties of this plant, but the NCCAM and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) agree that it appears to reasonably effective at improving mood among people experiencing the blues.

Researchers once thought that a compound in St. John's wort called hypericin had an effect on chemical transmitters in the brain. More recently, investigations have pointed to a different substance, hyperforin, which is also found in the plant.

Most health organizations recommend taking this herbal supplement for short periods of time for maximum effectiveness.

Now an international team of nutritionists and neuroscientists has found that omega-3s may also be crucial to a baby's mental health.

Their results appear in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Omega-3s are polyunsaturated fats that are essential for brain development in fetuses and young children. The research group theorized that if fed a diet almost totally lacking in omega-3s, pregnant women would give birth to children more likely to suffer from depression and other mental health issues.

Using rodents, the team found that females who are omega-3 deficient during pregnancy gave birth to offspring that exhibited neural deficiencies.

One type of neuron, called a cannabinoid receptor, was found to be completely deactivated in these mice. The offspring often displayed the symptoms of depression.

Researchers concluded that omega-3s are vital at nearly any age, and that their absence during gestation may predispose a child to mood disorders.

Omega-3s may be found in meat, fish, eggs, flaxseed oil and milk obtained from grass-fed cows, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Rather than "tender loving care," psychologist Roger Walsh's version stands for "therapeutic lifestyle changes."

In a paper published in the journal American Psychologist, Walsh recommended that teens and adults who suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental disorders may benefit as much from exercise, group activities and nature walks as from medication or psychiatric care.

After reviewing medical literature on the effects of an isolated lifestyle, Walsh, who is a professor at the university's College of Medicine, said that many mood disorders are associated with solitude and under-socializing.

He said that certain kinds of TLC may be able to improve attitude and outlook. These include exercising regularly, eating a fruit- and vegetable-rich diet, having a hobby, getting outdoors, meditating, using relaxation techniques and engaging in charitable activities.

The Nemours Foundation adds that expressing one's feelings, looking on the positive side of things and refraining from dwelling on the past are three more natural methods of combating depression.

Previous research has uncovered that omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in walnuts, can reduce the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or bad cholesterol. In order to determine if walnut and walnut oil consumption would benefit those with high blood pressure and constant stress, the researchers had 22 individuals with unhealthy LDL levels follow three diets for six weeks.

After completing the study, participants were asked to give a speech while their foot was in cold water, with the idea being that the action would cause stress levels to increase. As a result, those who followed a dietary regimen that included walnut products experienced less stress and had lower blood pressure.

Sheila G. West, lead author of the research, stated that these findings are important because "we can't avoid all of the stressors in our daily lives, [and] this study shows that a dietary change could help our bodies better respond to stress."

In addition to walnuts and walnut oil, eating brown rice can help improve blood pressure, according to a study conducted at the Temple University School of Medicine.

But according to new research, there may be healthy alternatives that these people can use in order to relieve their stress.

In a new study, researchers from the University of California, Davis and the University of California, San Francisco examined if meditation training was directly linked to a person's positive well-being and ability to cope with stress.

Telomerase is an enzyme that contributes to DNA sequencing. Tonya Jacobs, lead author of the investigation, said that the research shows "a relation between positive psychological change and telomerse activity."

The scientists analyzed 60 participants who were either in a control or retreat group. The subjects who were in the retreat group received meditation training and instructions. These individuals also practiced meditation on their own time. Meanwhile, those in the control group did not participate in the meditation training.

Telomerase activity was higher in the subjects who had completed the retreat, compared to the control group. The meditation participants also exhibited a decrease in their negative emotions as well as positive changes in their mood and state of well-being.

Depression affects nearly 15 million American adults in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. These individuals could turn to natural, and healthy ways like meditation to relive symptoms such as stress, which are associated with this disorder.

During a recent study, researchers divided 40 participants aged 10 to 14 into two groups. One group sat in a chair while viewing images of a neighborhood and school grounds, while the others completed a one-mile walk while viewing similar images.

Students were then asked to take a Stroop test, which has participants identify colors in several colored boxes.

While completing this task, the walkers’ heart rate increased by three beats per minute, while the sitting group experienced an increase of 11 beats. Researchers also discovered that the sitters had blood pressure levels that were three times higher than those who did the one-mile walk.

James Roemmich, lead author of the trial, stated that "the cardiovascular disease process begins in childhood, so if we can find some way of stopping or slowing that process, that would provide an important health benefit." He added that these findings show that "physical activity has a protective effect on the development of cardiovascular disease, and one way it may be doing so is by reducing stress reactivity."

In 2008, approximately 26.6 million people in the United States were diagnosed with heart disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports.

For the study, a total of 69 men who ranged in age from older teenagers to adults in their 60s underwent a series of psychiatric tests. The team then surveyed each individual about their childhood, and found that 19 men suffered from moderate to severe neglect or abuse as an adolescent.

The questionnaire was followed by a social stress test participants had their vital signs monitored and gave blood samples.

As a result, blood samples taken from men who were mistreated as boys had high levels of interleukin-6, an inflammatory marker that is associated with depression. The researchers concluded that larger study groups will be needed to determine if a stressful childhood will increase one's risk of developing a mood disorder.

Linda Carpenter, lead author of the research, stated that "we're not yet at a point, where we can say to help people 'Go get your stress test done.'" She added that "but what's clear is that a life of excess stress-induced inflammatory chemicals in your bloodstream is unlikely to be a good thing."

Currently, one in 10 adults in the U.S. suffers from depression, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

For this trial, researchers from University of California – San Diego (UCSD) analyzed results of a four-year study conducted from 1995 to 1999, which included 459 women. During the research, each participant's sleep duration was measured with a wrist activity monitor.

Of the group, a total of 358 women participated in follow-ups, while researchers found that a total of 86 individuals had passed away. As a result, those who slept between six-and-a-half and seven-and-a-half hours per night had the lowest mortality rate. Also, the team found that women who slept less than five hours were more likely to suffer from fatal health complications.

Furthermore, these findings showed that obstructive sleep apnea, especially in older women, was not linked to an increased risk of death.

Daniel F. Kripke, lead author of the study, stated that results show that "women who sleep as little as five to six-and-a-half hours have nothing to worry about since that amount of sleep is evidently consistent with excellent survival."
